    • The USMNT has a perfect record in knockout ties against Panama, winning all five previous encounters (excluding third-place play-off games).

    Match Preview

The United States and Panama will face off in the first semi-final of the 2023 Concacaf Gold Cup, with a spot in the final at stake. The winner of Mexico vs Jamaica will await them in Sunday’s final.

This is the United States’ record-breaking 16th appearance in a Gold Cup semi-final, having only missed out in 2000. They have advanced to the final in 12 of the previous 15 occasions, a tournament record.

Panama has reached the final twice before, but on both occasions, they were defeated by the United States in 2005 and 2013. These two tournaments added to the USA’s seven Gold Cup titles, a number that only Mexico surpasses with 11.

After a slow start in their opening match against Jamaica, where they drew 1-1, the USA bounced back with dominant wins over Saint Kitts and Nevis (6-0) and Trinidad and Tobago (6-0) to top their group. Jesús Ferreira scored hat-tricks in both matches, becoming the first US men’s player to achieve such a feat in consecutive games.

The USMNT advanced to the semi-finals after a thrilling penalty shootout victory against Canada, following a 2-2 draw in regular time. Goalkeeper Matt Turner made crucial saves from Steven Vitoria and Liam Fraser to secure the win for the United States.

Panama cruised to the semi-finals with a convincing 4-0 victory over Qatar in the quarter-finals, thanks to Ismael Díaz’s hat-trick in a span of just nine minutes and three seconds. They topped their group with seven points, winning two matches and drawing one.

    USA vs Panama Head-to-Head

This will be the 26th meeting between the United States and Panama, with the majority of those matches taking place since 2004. The USMNT holds the edge in the head-to-head record, winning 20 of the previous 25 encounters.

The United States has dominated Panama in home matches, winning their last four encounters by a combined score of 13-1. In fact, the US has scored at least three goals in three of those four matches.

This will be the sixth knockout match between these two nations, with the United States emerging victorious in all five previous encounters. Panama, along with Honduras, is one of two teams that the USMNT has faced in five or more knockout matches without ever being eliminated.

The most recent meeting between USA and Panama took place in March 2022, with the US winning 5-1 in a World Cup qualifier. Christian Pulisic scored a hat-trick in that match.
