A tragic incident occurred in California, where a 21-year-old athlete lost his life after being left on the side of a busy highway by his Uber driver. According to the lawsuit filed by the man’s parents, they are accusing the rideshare company of negligence and wrongful death. As of now, Uber has not provided any comment regarding this matter.
The incident took place on Highway 91 in Corona, which is approximately 50 miles southeast of Los Angeles. Cory Hunter was riding in an Uber with five other passengers around 2:30 am on May 21 when the vehicle pulled onto the shoulder. Hunter, who had fallen asleep, was awakened by his fellow passengers and instructed to exit the car so that someone could vomit. However, after stepping out of the vehicle, Hunter did not get back in, as stated in the lawsuit.
Shockingly, the Uber driver drove away, leaving Hunter alone on the side of a busy highway, knowingly putting his life in danger. Just before 3 am, Hunter was struck by a Toyota Corolla and sustained fatal injuries. The driver of the car stopped to help and was not investigated for any crime.
According to Theida Salazar, the attorney representing the Uber driver, his client drove back to the spot where Hunter had exited the vehicle to search for him but could not find him. Salazar stated that when the driver learned about Hunter’s tragic death, he was deeply shaken. The attorney emphasized that his client is a compassionate person who takes his responsibilities seriously.
Cory Hunter was not just an ordinary individual; he was a gifted athlete and a beloved football player. People who knew him described him as someone who brought love and laughter everywhere he went. Hunter’s high school football coach shared his condolences in an Instagram post, praising his positive attitude, hard work, and the joy he spread.
Hunter’s cousin also spoke highly of him, stating that he was a kind leader who continuously inspired others. His sister expressed that Cory was her source of happiness, and being around him made everything feel warm and calm. A close friend of his highlighted his positive light and incredible motivation, which served as inspiration for those around him.
Throughout his life, Cory Hunter achieved numerous accomplishments, including running a marathon, bench-pressing 225 pounds, winning a football award, and becoming homecoming king. His family has filed a lawsuit seeking compensatory damages of over US$25,000.
