(Reuters) – After months of testing, Adobe announced on Wednesday that it has opened up access to a range of generative artificial intelligence (AI) features across its software. As part of this move, Adobe plans to raise prices, but also to pay the contributors whose work helps make these features possible.

Adobe is renowned for creating Photoshop and other editing tools that form the core of its Creative Cloud subscription software. Over the past six months, the company has been gradually integrating new AI features into these programs, including the ability to generate images from text.

Addressing a contentious issue surrounding AI-generated content, Adobe promises businesses that the content its systems produce will be legally safe to use. This comes as content creators challenge technology firms in court, claiming they are owed royalties for the use of their work in “training” AI systems. Adobe ensures that their system is based on content they have rights to or content that is in the public domain. Furthermore, the company offers a financial indemnity to its customers to support its claims.

Furthermore, starting from November, Adobe revealed that prices for many of its subscription products will increase by $2 to $5 per month. As for accessing generative AI features, Adobe customers will be allocated a specific number of “credits” towards their usage. Once these credits are depleted, users can choose to either purchase more or continue using the features at slower speeds.

Additionally, Adobe announced that it will compensate the contributors to its stock imagery databases that are utilized to train its AI systems. This year, Adobe will issue a one-time “contributor” bonus to artists based on the quantity of images they have contributed to Adobe’s database and the number of times their images were licensed through traditional means. The time frame for this evaluation ranges from June 3, 2022 to June 3, 2023.

Starting from the following year, Adobe will pay out this bonus annually for the training work carried out with its AI systems. Ely Greenfield, Chief Technology Officer for Digital Media at Adobe, highlighted the importance of stock contributors’ continued involvement both for the stock market and for the value they provide to the training of these AI models.

“We want our stock contributors to continue to contribute both for the stock market, which is paying out more than it ever has, and for the value they’re contributing to the training of these models,” Greenfield said.

The opening of access to generative AI features is a significant move for Adobe, as it positions itself to leverage AI technology in its software offerings. By compensating contributors, the company aims to foster collaboration and innovation within the creative community.
