    Amazon is rolling out a generative AI feature that summarizes product reviews

    Amazon has launched a new generative AI feature that provides summaries of product reviews for customers. The feature, which was tested earlier this year, aims to help shoppers quickly understand what other customers think about a product before delving into individual reviews. It identifies common themes and condenses them into a short paragraph on the product detail page. Initially, this AI-generated review feature is available to a selected group of mobile shoppers in the US across a variety of products. However, based on customer feedback, Amazon’s director of community shopping, Vaughn Schermerhorn, stated that it may be expanded to more shoppers and additional product categories in the near future.

    As the competition for generative AI technologies intensifies, Amazon has been actively incorporating more artificial intelligence into its product offerings. Unlike other tech companies that have released prominent AI chatbots or imaging tools, Amazon has concentrated on providing services on its cloud infrastructure AWS, enabling developers to build their own generative AI tools. Earlier this year, in a letter to shareholders, Amazon CEO Andy Jassy emphasized the significance of generative AI for the company. He also mentioned during an earnings call with investors that all the different sectors within Amazon are currently undertaking multiple generative AI initiatives, including the devices unit responsible for products like the voice assistant Alexa.

    In addition to the AI-generated review feature, Amazon announced the introduction of a product insights feature. This feature allows customers to discover common themes present in reviews. By analyzing the reviews, Amazon aims to assist customers in making more informed decisions about products.

    By leveraging generative AI, Amazon joins a growing list of companies incorporating this technology into their products and services. Through the use of AI, Amazon aims to enhance the shopping experience and provide customers with easily accessible information about products.
