(Reuters) – Apple has urged members of the California legislature to pass the “right to repair bill” or “Senate Bill 244” in its current form, as stated in a letter on Tuesday. This bill would require manufacturers to allow customers to repair their damaged devices.
This marks a significant shift for the iPhone maker, as it has long opposed access to repairs. The bill in question would mandate electronic device makers to provide tools for repairing damaged appliances.
In the letter, Apple stated, “We support “SB 244″ because it includes requirements that protect individual users’ safety and security, as well as product manufacturers’ intellectual property.”
