PARIS (Reuters) – Belgium’s state secretary for digitalisation said on Friday he had asked Apple to upgrade the iPhone 12 software across EU countries, adding however that based on a preliminary review by the Belgian regulator the handset presents no danger to users.

Mathieu Michel, in a statement, mentioned that the phone is currently under review by the IBPT regulator. Nonetheless, the initial findings are “reassuring” and there is no requirement for a recall of the phone in Belgium.

In response to France’s decision to halt sales of the iPhone 12 due to breaches of radiation exposure limits, Belgium announced on Thursday that they would be investigating potential health risks associated with Apple’s product. This move raises the possibility that other European countries might also implement sales bans on the model.

While the Belgian review is ongoing, Mathieu Michel sought Apple’s cooperation in upgrading the software of the iPhone 12 across all EU countries. This proactive measure aims to address any potential concerns and ensure the safety of users.

The Belgian regulator’s preliminary assessment provided a sense of relief, indicating that the iPhone 12 does not endanger the well-being of its users. However, further investigations will be conducted before any final conclusions can be made.

By actively engaging with Apple and seeking their cooperation, Belgium is taking a precautionary approach to prioritize consumer safety. This decision aligns with the Belgian government’s commitment to ensure that the digital devices sold within the country abide by stringent safety standards.

As the review progresses, it remains to be seen whether other European countries will follow France and Belgium in scrutinizing the iPhone 12 for potential health risks. The outcomes of these investigations will influence the future availability of the model across the continent.
