A man in China has sparked outrage on mainland social media after refusing to pay 10,800 yuan (RM6,853) in child support for his seven-year-old daughter from a previous marriage for 18 months.
The incident gained attention when a video emerged of the man’s ex-wife and daughter confronting him at his wedding to his new partner, demanding payment.
In the video, filmed by the ex-wife Zhang Na from Anhui province, her daughter can be heard saying, “Daddy, pay for child support,” as Zhang Yongquan exits the wedding car.
According to Sohu News, Zhang Na revealed that a local court had ordered her ex-husband to pay 600 yuan (RM380) in monthly support. However, she had only received one payment of 7,000 yuan (RM4,443) 18 months prior.
Despite multiple attempts to contact him, Zhang Na claimed her ex-husband ignored her calls and messages, even blocking her on WeChat. “I can afford to raise my child, but I find his behavior very hard to swallow,” she told Sohu News.
Upon hearing of her ex-husband’s upcoming marriage, Zhang Na decided to confront him in person with their daughter and demand the owed money.
Upon seeing Zhang Na and their daughter, Zhang Yongquan called the police and accused her of causing trouble.
After learning the truth, the police declined to arrest Zhang Na and allowed her and their daughter to attend the wedding.
During the wedding ceremony, Zhang Na claimed her ex-husband completely ignored their daughter, not uttering a single word to her.
Social media users on the mainland expressed their disapproval of the ex-husband’s actions.
“Bride, are you sure you want to marry this man?” one person questioned.
Another remarked, “Poor little daughter, she must be shocked.”
Divorce payments and child support disputes often attract attention on mainland social media.
Last month, a woman in southwestern China caused a scene at her ex-husband’s wedding by displaying a banner that read, “Accepting concubines on my husband’s behalf” during their dispute over 1 million yuan (RM634,620) from their divorce settlement.
In a separate incident last year, a sterile man in Shanghai made headlines when he filed for divorce and refused to financially support a child his wife had with another man while they were married.
