Ecuadoran prosecutors have launched an investigation into the distribution of videos created using artificial intelligence (AI) that contain sexual content using images of students, according to reports on Thursday (Oct 5).
The probe follows the dissemination of images and videos of students from an educational institution in Quito that were modified using AI, the prosecutor’s office announced on X (formerly known as Twitter).
The individuals responsible for the crime manipulated pictures of teenagers by overlaying their faces onto naked bodies of other people.
Sybel Martinez, of the anti-bullying program Grupo Rescate Escolar, stated that there were around 700 videos of sexual and erotic content involving images of approximately 20 to 24 students.
In Ecuador, distributing child and adolescent pornography is punishable by up to 16 years in prison.
This investigation comes after a similar incident in Spain, where AI-generated nudes of underage girls were distributed.
The advent of AI has raised concerns worldwide about its potential use for malicious purposes, particularly in the creation of “deepfakes.” These are computer-generated images and videos that are often realistic and based on real templates.
According to a 2019 study by Dutch AI company Sensity, about 96% of deepfake videos online are non-consensual pornography, and most of them depict women.
