Months of discussion and debate have taken place on an invitation-only chat between Google and Discord, focusing on Bard, Google’s AI-powered chatbot. Members of the chat, including product managers and user experience leads, have openly questioned the effectiveness and utility of the AI tool. Concerns have been raised about the trustworthiness of large language models (LLMs) and their usefulness in terms of helpfulness. Google released Bard in March as a response to OpenAI’s ChatGPT bot, and has continued to add new features. However, there have been complaints about the tool generating false information and giving dangerous advice. Additionally, experts have raised concerns about the working conditions of low-paid contractors training Bard. As generative AI has gained popularity, Google’s dominance in search has been challenged. Two participants in the Bard community on Discord shared details of discussions that took place between July and October, showing that even Google’s own leaders have reservations about the tool. Google has responded to the debate, stating that it values feedback and is eager to improve the experience of Bard. The company acknowledges the limitations of Bard, including the possibility of generating inaccurate or offensive information. Bard was launched as an experiment and the Discord server was designed as an invitation-based community. Google representatives have said that they expect to learn more about Bard as the public continues to use it.
