MESEBERG: Germany’s Cabinet has agreed on plans to establish the necessary legal and technical conditions for the implementation of artificial intelligence (AI) in the public sector.

The decision was made as part of a new data strategy that the Cabinet approved during its two-day retreat at the Meseberg palace, located outside of Berlin.

The government is also considering the possibility of developing its own AI language models, commonly referred to as Large Language Models (LLM).

“We are currently evaluating the potential benefits and risks of utilizing LLMs within the public sector, while prioritizing data protection,” stated in the strategy document.

Germany possesses an extensive repository of data which they now aim to utilize fully, according to Minister of Transport and Digital Affairs, Volker Wissing.

“Historically, data has often remained unused, hindering digital advancement. This applies to both industrial and public data. We are determined to change this,” Wissing emphasized.

The government’s plans seek to harness the power of AI in the public sector, enabling efficient data processing and analysis to drive innovation and enhance services.

However, safeguards will be put in place to ensure the responsible use of AI, with a focus on protecting individual privacy and maintaining data security.

The implementation of AI in the public sector is expected to facilitate various processes, such as improving government services, optimizing resource allocation, and enhancing decision-making.

This move by the German government reflects the increasing recognition of the potential benefits that AI can bring to governance, as well as the need for comprehensive regulations and frameworks to support its safe and ethical usage.
