SEOUL (Reuters) – South Korea’s largest telco SK Telecom announced that it will invest $100 million in Anthropic, a leading U.S.-based artificial intelligence firm. This move aims to strengthen SK Telecom’s telecommunications-driven AI business.
Anthropic, a startup known for its competition with OpenAI in the development of AI foundation models, is one of the most well-funded AI firms. In May, the company successfully raised $450 million from investors including Google, a subsidiary of Alphabet Inc, and Spark Capital.
SK Telecom, which had previously made a smaller investment in Anthropic in May, announced on Sunday that both companies plan to collaborate in the development of a global telecommunications-oriented multilingual large language model. Furthermore, they aim to build an AI platform that aligns with the telecommunications industry.
Although SK Telecom did not disclose the exact size of its investment in May or the stake it holds in Anthropic, this significant infusion of funds further showcases SK Telecom’s commitment to the partnership.
Anthropic, founded in 2021 by former executives from OpenAI, has gained attention for its Claude models. These models are considered to be major competitors to OpenAI’s GPT-4, another prominent AI model.
In July, SK Telecom established an alliance with Deutsche Telekom, e&, and Singapore Telecommunications to jointly develop telecommunications-driven AI businesses. This collaboration is expected to drive technological advancements and enhance capabilities in the field of AI.
SK Telecom’s recent investment in Anthropic reflects the company’s dedication to leveraging AI technology to revolutionize the telecommunications sector. By partnering with a leading AI firm, SK Telecom aims to enhance its services and stay ahead in the competitive telecom market.
