PARIS: Google has expanded the availability of its AI chatbot Bard to several countries, including the European Union and Brazil, on July 13. In addition, Google has introduced new features to Bard as it aims to compete with Microsoft-backed ChatGPT. The release of Bard in the EU was delayed due to concerns about AI regulation in the region. However, Google has sought to address these concerns by engaging with experts, policymakers, and privacy regulators.

According to Bard’s product lead Jack Krawczyk and vice president Amarnag Subramanya, the chatbot is now accessible in most of the world and supports a wide range of languages. The company plans to incorporate user feedback and take steps to protect privacy and data as it expands access to Bard. The AI tool can now be used in over 40 languages, offering audio responses and answers in different styles.

Google’s expansion of AI technology comes with both excitement and concerns. AI tools have demonstrated remarkable capabilities, such as generating essays, creating realistic images, and even mimicking voices of famous singers. However, there are worries about potential issues like disinformation, biased algorithms, and widespread job displacement due to AI-powered automation.

Notably, experts, including Sam Altman, the founder of OpenAI, have highlighted the existential risks associated with AI. In May, Altman and other specialists signed a statement urging global leaders to address these risks to humanity. Despite the warnings, AI development continues to progress rapidly, with companies like Tesla and Twitter launching their own AI ventures.

In response to the concerns surrounding AI, the European Parliament has proposed comprehensive rules for AI, which include specific provisions for generative AI systems like ChatGPT. The regulation aims to ensure transparency in AI-generated content and prohibit certain uses of AI technology, such as real-time facial recognition systems. Negotiations are underway, and the EU aims to reach a deal by the end of the year.
