Google plans to launch an updated version of its virtual assistant that will be powered by the company’s Bard artificial intelligence (AI) technology, enabling users to handle more complex tasks. This new offering, called Assistant with Bard, will be available for testing in the near future and will be made accessible to the general public in the coming months, as stated by the company on Wednesday (Oct 4). By incorporating the capabilities of Bard, a chatbot developed as an alternative to OpenAI’s highly popular ChatGPT, Assistant will be able to enhance the completion of tasks and information retrieval for Android and Google users.

In a blog post accompanying the announcement, Sissie Hsiao, Vice President of Google, expressed how generative AI is creating new possibilities in constructing a more intuitive, intelligent, and personalized digital assistant. As major tech companies strive to seize opportunities offered by AI advancements, Google is integrating this technology into its extensive range of products. Last month, Google’s parent company, Alphabet Inc, revealed its plan to integrate the Bard chatbot into services such as Gmail, Maps, Docs, and YouTube.

During a hardware event held at Google’s office in Manhattan Pier 57 on Wednesday, Rick Osterloh, Chief of Google Devices, explained various ways in which Google is incorporating generative AI, a technology capable of creating new media such as text and video given simple prompts, into its apps and services. Osterloh also disclosed that next year, the experimental features of the Google Home app will include summaries of activity concerning one’s front door, as well as the ability to inquire about the status of packages using natural language.
