NEW DELHI (Reuters) – Apple, Dell, HP, Samsung, and Lenovo are among the 110 companies authorized by India to import laptops, tablets, and personal computers under a new system aimed at monitoring shipments, according to two government sources.
The sources also revealed that Acer, Xiaomi, IBM, and ASUS have received import authorizations under India’s new “import management system,” which was implemented on Wednesday.
Last month, India introduced the new system for laptops, tablets, and personal computers after withdrawing a previous plan to impose a licensing regime due to backlash from the industry and Washington.
The companies are required to register the quantity and value of imports on a portal, with their authorizations remaining valid until September 2024.
As of now, India’s federal trade ministry has not responded to a request for comment. The sources requested anonymity as the details of the authorizations have not yet been made public.
