(Reuters) – India’s No.2 software-services exporter Infosys Ltd has asked some of its employees to work from the office 10 days a month, according to a source familiar with the matter.
The announcement comes amid a trend of companies worldwide reversing or modifying their remote work policies implemented during the peak of the Covid-19 pandemic. Reasons cited for the change range from improved efficiency to better collaboration.
Infosys, which declined to comment on the news, has informed selected entry and mid-level staff via email about the upcoming change set to take effect on November 20.
However, not all employees will be affected by this requirement.
“We are very clear that we want to remain flexible with our employees. Having said that, every quarter, every week we are seeing more and more employees back on campus, and we believe this will continue,” stated Infosys CEO Salil Parekh during a post-earning conference call on October 12.
Last week, controversy arose when the company’s co-founder N.R. Narayana Murthy urged young Indians to work 70 hours a week for the country’s development.
Larger rival Tata Consultancy Services has already instructed employees to return to the office for five days a week.
Tech giants Amazon.com Inc and Alphabet Inc’s Google have also implemented policies requiring workers to be in the office for at least a few days every week.
