(Reuters) – Meta Platforms has introduced the web version of its text-first social media platform, Threads, in an attempt to retain professional users and gain a competitive advantage over its rival, X (formerly Twitter).
According to the Facebook and Instagram owner, Threads’ users can now access the microblogging platform by logging in to its website from their computers.
This highly anticipated release could help Threads achieve wider acceptance among power users such as brands, company accounts, advertisers, and journalists, who can now utilize the platform on a larger screen.
Initially, Threads gained significant popularity, amassing over 100 million sign-ups within five days of its July 5 launch. However, its user base declined as many users returned to the more familiar X platform after the initial buzz.
According to a report by analytics platform Similarweb dated August 10, the Android version of Threads experienced a drop in daily active users from a peak of 49.3 million to 10.3 million in just over a month.
Meta has announced that it will be adding more functionality to the web experience in the upcoming weeks.
