LOS GATOS: Netflix is planning to expand its offerings by entering the video game industry with a new cloud gaming service. This move will allow people to play games online without having to invest in expensive gaming hardware.
Similar to cloud gaming platforms provided by Microsoft and Nvidia, Netflix’s service will run the games on remote servers equipped with advanced gaming hardware. This means that players at home will only require a screen and a stable Internet connection.
The company is currently testing its cloud gaming service in the UK and Canada. A limited number of users in these regions can now play games on their televisions and computers through Netflix. The trial offers two games, an arcade game and a supernatural thriller, which can be accessed through Samsung and LG TVs, as well as streaming boxes from Amazon and Google. It also supports Windows PCs and Apple’s Mac computers.
Netflix allows players to control the gameplay using their mobile phones. The company seems to be focusing on providing a more accessible gaming experience rather than competing with high-end gaming consoles like Microsoft’s Xbox and Sony’s PlayStation.
Netflix’s entry into the cloud gaming market comes after years of technical experience in delivering video content over the internet. The company had previously begun offering mobile-oriented video games a few years ago and has been gradually expanding its gaming offerings. The first games were made available to subscribers on smartphones towards the end of 2021. – dpa
