Last week, Sony announced a redesign of the PlayStation 5, with a slimmer chassis boasting a 30% reduction in size compared to previous models and the option to add a disc drive to a digital-only base model.
The company has confirmed that the new consoles will be making their way to our shores, with the digital-only variant priced at RM2,069 and a bundle with the disc drive at RM2,499.
The new consoles are priced the same as the previous models, which were subject to a price hike in August 2022.
For users who opt for the digital-only model, there is the option to purchase the Blu-ray disc drive separately later down the line, albeit for a slight premium when compared to the bundle at RM529.
Users will have to remove the faceplate in order to attach the drive.
According to Sony, the new, more compact PS5 will replace the existing models, with availability for the original units ceasing once the current inventory is sold out.
While the global announcement mentions a November launch in the United States, Europe, the United Kingdom, and Japan, the company has yet to disclose the availability for Malaysia or South-East Asia.
The redesigned model, featuring a slightly larger 1TB (vs 825GB) internal storage and a horizontal stand, has mainly received form factor upgrades rather than better hardware.
Some may notice the lack of an included vertical stand that at least partially gave birth to the console’s striking profile – with the new model, Sony has opted to sell a redesigned version of the vertical stand separately for RM149.
The new stand is also compatible with all PS5 consoles, both old and new.
A selection of console covers for the new model will be available in early 2024, with color options including matte Black, Volcanic Red, Cobalt Blue, and Sterling Silver, with additional colors to be released later.
