TOKYO (Reuters) – Nintendo announced on Tuesday that it sold 6.84 million units of its popular Switch console in the first half of the financial year. This number represents a slight increase compared to the 6.68 million units sold during the same period last year. The Kyoto-based gaming company reconfirmed its full-year forecast of 15 million units, which would result in a 16.5% decline from the previous year’s sales.

Nintendo has managed to prolong the Switch’s lifecycle, as the console is now in its seventh year on the market. This achievement has been made possible through the release of several highly successful games. Notably, titles such as “The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom” and “Super Mario Bros. Wonder” received critical acclaim and achieved significant sales numbers. In addition to gaming, Nintendo has also found success in other forms of media, including the recent Super Mario Bros. movie.

The gaming industry, as a whole, has had an exceptional year in terms of new game releases. The global pandemic disrupted development plans, causing delays and cancellations. However, the industry has rebounded, resulting in a highly anticipated line-up of new games for 2023. Nintendo’s year-end shopping season is expected to be particularly strong thanks to the upcoming release of “Super Mario RPG” on November 17th.
