(Reuters) – New York Attorney General Letitia James has filed a lawsuit against cryptocurrency firms Gemini, Genesis Global, and Digital Currency Group, alleging that they have defrauded investors of more than $1 billion. The Office of the Attorney General conducted an investigation and discovered that Gemini had provided false information about an investment program it operated with Genesis, according to James.

Neither Gemini, Genesis Global, nor Digital Currency Group have yet responded to requests for comment from Reuters.

The lawsuit marks the latest blow to the credibility of the cryptocurrency industry, which has faced scrutiny and regulatory challenges in recent years. The attorney general’s office is seeking compensation for the alleged losses suffered by investors, as well as punitive damages.

The alleged fraudulent activity by Gemini, Genesis Global, and Digital Currency Group is part of a broader crackdown on illegal practices in the cryptocurrency market. Law enforcement agencies and regulators around the world have stepped up their efforts to protect investors and maintain the integrity of the financial system.

Cryptocurrencies have gained popularity in recent years, attracting both retail and institutional investors. However, their volatile nature and lack of regulation have raised concerns about potential scams and frauds. Regulators have been grappling with how to strike the right balance between promoting innovation and safeguarding investors.

The lawsuit filed by the New York attorney general is expected to bring renewed attention to the need for stronger regulation and oversight in the cryptocurrency market.

Gemini, founded by the Winklevoss twins, has been one of the leading cryptocurrency exchanges in the United States. The company has sought to position itself as a trusted and compliant platform, but this lawsuit threatens to tarnish its reputation.

It also underscores the importance of due diligence and investor protection when participating in the cryptocurrency market.
