(Reuters) – Artificial intelligence firm OpenAI announced on Wednesday that it has acquired Global Illumination, a digital products company. This marks OpenAI’s first known acquisition in its history. The financial terms of the deal have not been disclosed.

OpenAI stated that the entire team of Global Illumination has joined their company to collaborate on their core products, including ChatGPT.

New York-based Global Illumination was established in 2021 by Thomas Dimson, Taylor Gordon, and Joey Flynn. All three founders have previously worked at Meta Platforms’ Instagram.

Prior to the acquisition, Global Illumination had been focusing on open-source technology for online game production. Thomas Dimson, in particular, is recognized for his contribution in developing the original code for Instagram’s content ranking algorithms, as indicated on his personal website.

This acquisition signifies OpenAI’s expansion plans and its deliberate move to strengthen its team and enhance its product offerings. The company remains committed to advancing artificial intelligence technology.

OpenAI is a prominent organization in the field of artificial intelligence, known for its cutting-edge research and development. The company is backed by leading technology entrepreneur Elon Musk and several other high-profile investors.

The acquisition of Global Illumination demonstrates OpenAI’s strategic vision to leverage the expertise and experiences of talented professionals in order to accelerate innovation and maintain a competitive edge in the market.

No further details about the acquisition have been provided at this time. Both OpenAI and Global Illumination are expected to release more information in the coming months.
