(Reuters) – OpenAI is investing $5 million in the American Journalism Project (AJP) to support local news using artificial intelligence, the Microsoft-backed startup announced on Tuesday.
The partnership will also grant the non-profit and affiliated organizations up to $5 million in OpenAI credits to utilize ChatGPT technology.
This collaboration is part of OpenAI’s larger effort to work with media organizations. Last week, they reached an agreement with news publisher the Associated Press (AP) to license a portion of AP’s storied archive and explore the use of generative AI in news.
The funding from AJP will facilitate the creation of a studio where local news outlets can experiment with OpenAI’s technology. Additionally, grants will be distributed to about 10 portfolio organizations to pilot and explore AI applications.
“Through this partnership, we aim to show how AI can enhance journalism instead of posing a threat,” said Sarabeth Berman, CEO of AJP.
AJP is a venture philanthropy organization that offers grants to local nonprofit news agencies to ensure the sustainability of their newsrooms.
So far, they have raised $139 million from local and national funders to address the crisis facing local news in the United States. They also support 41 nonprofit local news organizations across the nation.
