WASHINGTON: Apple’s former lead designer Jony Ive is reportedly in discussions with ChatGPT creator OpenAI to develop an “iPhone of Artificial Intelligence,” as stated by the Financial Times on Thursday (Sept 29).
According to three unnamed sources, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has approached Ive’s company LoveFrom to collaborate on what would be the ChatGPT creator’s first consumer device.
Softbank, a Japanese conglomerate, is expected to finance the project with an investment of US$1 billion (RM4.69 billion), with its chip design company Arm playing a crucial role.
The report stated that discussions regarding the project are in the advanced stages, although there are still various ideas being considered before settling on a specific product.
If the venture were to be formally agreed upon, it could take several months, and the development of the product itself would likely span many years before it reaches the market.
During his tenure at Apple from 1997 to 2019, Ive served as the chief design officer, contributing significantly to the design of numerous iconic products such as the iPhone and MacBook. – AFP
