BERLIN: Whether it’s a revolver or a laser sword, there’s usually no shortage of weapons, even unusual ones, in video games. However, the weapon of choice in the noir-punk action-adventure “Gunbrella” is relatively unprecedented: a gun-umbrella hybrid.
Players take on the role of a lumberjack whose wife has been murdered and his child kidnapped. The only clue to the perpetrators is the Gunbrella, a combination of shotgun and shield left at the crime scene. Without further ado, you put on your detective hat and head into the gritty city in search of answers.

In classic 2D environments, the eponymous weapon is more versatile than almost any other. One moment you’re firing at enemies with it, the next you’re using it to protect yourself from their shots. The umbrella also helps you to move, as you can glide along ropes with it thanks to its handle or float around like Mary Poppins.
Apart from gun battles with gangsters and the like, you can also talk to city dwellers in search of clues. This is how you get on the trail of the devious villains who control the city. Settings designed in a dark pixel style add to the grim atmosphere.

Gunbrella doesn’t offer more than five to 10 hours of gameplay but at a fair price of €15/US$15 (RM38.50 in Malaysia). All in all, the game offers an adventure with a rather tricky weapon and an exceptionally gloomy setting.
Gunbrella, developed by Doinksoft and published by Devolver Digital, is available for PCs and the Nintendo Switch. – dpa
