(Reuters) – A Russian court has rejected Apple’s appeal against the alleged abuse of its dominant market position in terms of in-app payments, for which it was fined 1.2 billion roubles ($12.1 million) in January, according to the RIA news agency.
Apple did not immediately respond to an emailed request for comment.
In January, Russia’s federal anti-monopoly service (FAS) fined Apple for what it claimed was the U.S. company’s abuse of its dominant market position. The regulator stated that Apple had forced Russian developers to utilize Apple’s payment services with the iOS App Store, violating Russia’s competition rules.
The FAS’s decision came into effect in May after receiving approval from a Moscow court. Apple had appealed both the decision and the fine.
Since January, the rouble has depreciated significantly. Consequently, the fine has decreased by over $5 million in dollar terms.
The current exchange rate is $1 = 99.1990 roubles.
