According to a report from Samsung-centric news site SamMobile, Samsung is considering the possibility of offering more than five years of support for security updates on its devices.

Currently, the South Korean tech giant provides security updates for a minimum of four years following the device’s global launch, with select newer models being supported for up to five years.

Based on SamMobile’s interview with Samsung Mobile eXperience division principal engineer and technical program manager Shin-Chul Baik, the company is in active discussion on how it should handle long term security updates beyond that period.

Baik further goes on to mention that in light of new regulations, Samsung has already started preparations to provide extended security support beyond the currently offered five years.

This is in reference to the European Union’s push to have smartphone companies provide security updates for at least five years, while also designing devices to be more repairable and longer lasting.

The interview statements come after Google announced last week that its newly unveiled Pixel 8 series would be receiving seven years worth of software support, including feature updates with new versions of Android, security updates and feature drops.
