A phone scammer pretending to be Capt Chris Gulli from the Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Office was caught when the real Gulli decided to call the scammer’s phone number. The scammer had been calling residents and threatening them with arrest unless they paid off fake warrants. Usually, the scammers don’t answer when they receive calls, but this time the scammer picked up and identified himself as Captain Chris Gulli of the Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Office.
The Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Office shared the recording of the call made by Gulli. During the call, Gulli asked the scammer if he was really a sheriff captain, to which the scammer confidently replied, “Why would I not be, sir?” Gulli then informed the scammer that he was standing in the sheriff’s office wearing a shirt that read “Capt. Chris Gulli,” highlighting the absurdity of the situation.
The scammer was taken aback and asked Gulli for his badge number, while Gulli requested the scammer’s badge number. The scammer, not expecting this response, retorted, “Well, I asked you first.” Eventually, the scammer ended the call.
Gulli expressed shock at speaking to his own impersonator and commented on the scammer’s faulty research, pointing out that he does not have a thick Southern accent as the scammer had assumed.
The Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Office reminds residents that legitimate law enforcement officers will never demand payment over the phone to resolve warrants or fines. They advised any Arapahoe County residents who receive such calls to contact the police.
Arapahoe County is located approximately 50 miles east of Denver.
