Sony Group Corp has unveiled a slimmer, lighter PlayStation 5 with a detachable disc drive, in a bid to boost sales over the holiday season.
It’s the first major update to the current generation console, which initially launched in November 2020.
In a blog post, Sony announced that the new slimmed-down machine had been “reduced in volume by more than 30%” and will come equipped with 1TB SSD storage.
The new twist with the upcoming PS5 model is that consumers now have the option to purchase the cheaper digital-only version of the console as before, but can also choose to upgrade it with a Blu-ray drive add-on.
The two new consoles, one with a disc drive and one without, are set to be released in November. The prices are as follows: $500 for the version with the disc drive and $450 for the version without. In the UK, the prices will be £480 and £390 respectively, and in Japan, the prices will be 67,000 yen and 60,000 yen.
This release follows the earlier launch this year of a new high-end customizable DualSense Edge controller.
