TOKYO: Super Mario as an elephant with a trunk and giant ears? This image from the first presentation of “Super Mario Bros. Wonder” immediately went viral. But the latest addition to the Mario universe is about much more than just that.

Wonder” plays very much like a classic 2D Mario title: running from left to right, collecting coins, hopping onto platforms and enemies, or slipping into green tubes.

The titular “wonder”, however, comes in the form of the so-called wonder flowers. When they’re collected, the level turns into a colourful glowing world where surprising things happen.

Tubes come to life, Mario becomes a small brown mushroom creature called a Goomba or rides through the level on a herd of buffalo.

The transformation into an elephant is a regular power-up like collecting a fire flower or a mushroom. As an elephant, players can store water in their trunk, trickle it out or use it to catapult enemies away.

As in previous games, the world is divided into individual levels that can be selected on a large world map. In many sections it’s possible for the players to move freely. In addition to regular levels, the game world also offers small challenges.
