A 17-year-old boy has been accused of stabbing his uncle to death in Florida after an argument in their home turned violent, according to local police. Antae’viaun Richardson, who lives with his mother, uncle, and his uncle’s girlfriend in Melbourne, was arrested following the incident on September 3. The arrest affidavit, obtained by McClatchy News, revealed that the girlfriend told Melbourne Police the argument between her and her boyfriend escalated when they were having a dispute about money and his drug use. She claimed her boyfriend began choking her when Richardson’s mother heard the commotion and entered the room to intervene. However, the uncle persisted and a fight ensued between Richardson and his uncle.
The altercation started in the bedroom, but then spilled over into the living room. According to the affidavit, Richardson stated that he punched his uncle in the face in an attempt to defend his mother. The fight temporarily stopped, but escalated again when the uncle made a threatening remark to Richardson. In response, Richardson retrieved a serrated steak knife from the kitchen sink. His mother managed to convince him to put the knife on the couch, but the uncle charged at Richardson and pinned him down.
Richardson claimed his uncle began choking him, only stopping when Richardson’s sister screamed for him to stop. At that point, the uncle allowed Richardson to stand up. However, Richardson grabbed the knife again and chased his uncle, eventually stabbing him in the neck. The affidavit reveals that Richardson admitted to being aware that a stab to the neck could be lethal. When asked if he had any choice but to stab his uncle, Richardson responded with a “no”. Emergency services responded to the stabbing call, but unfortunately, the uncle was pronounced dead.
As a result of the incident, Richardson has been charged with manslaughter and aggravated assault. He has been taken into custody.
Melbourne is located approximately 70 miles southeast of Orlando.
