Bluetooth is an essential technology for linking up different connected devices. However, it remains a relatively risky connection mode, and it uses a lot of power. It can therefore be wise to exercise caution with its use.

Bluetooth is a wireless communication standard that lets users enjoy a wide range of connected devices. It is most frequently used to listen to music or podcasts on wireless headphones or speakers, via connection to a smartphone, for example. While pairing may sometimes be problematic, that’s a minor concern compared to the security and privacy risk that Bluetooth can bring.

It has long been known that malicious individuals can not only take remote control of Bluetooth-connected devices, but also collect personal data. In fact, keeping Bluetooth permanently activated on your smartphone or computer makes these devices vulnerable, and exposes you to a non-negligible risk of having your personal information stolen.

If you need to, don’t hesitate to use Bluetooth, but remember to switch it off again as soon as you’ve finished. Likewise, use Bluetooth in low-density areas, and avoid switching on your connection in crowds or on public transport.

Note that Bluetooth also consumes a lot of power, albeit less than WiFi, so it can be wise to use it sparingly, especially if your smartphone is starting to show signs of battery fatigue.

In a nutshell, the golden rule with Bluetooth is to make sure you switch it off when you no longer need it, so as not to expose your devices to any risk of remote hacking. This advice also applies to public WiFi networks. – AFP Relaxnews
