Update: In a statement on its website, TM announced that personal information belonging to Unifi customers, such as names, MyKad/passport numbers, and contact details, was exposed in a recent data breach. However, no financial information was compromised.

The company has promptly reported the incident to the National Cyber Coordination and Command Centre (NC4), the Department of Privacy and Data Protection (JPDP), and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC).

Despite the breach, TM assures its Unifi service users that it remains functioning normally and without any impact on their usage.

PETALING JAYA: Telekom Malaysia (TM) has alerted Unifi users through an SMS dated July 12, informing them of a data breach that affects specific customers.

“A data breach involving certain information of select Unifi customers has occurred.

“We have isolated the risk and implemented additional security measures to safeguard our customers. We have also notified the relevant authorities for further action,” stated TM in the message, sincerely apologizing for any inconvenience caused.

Upon contacting a TM representative, it was confirmed that the SMS served as a proactive notification from the company in response to a new incident. The representative expressed that a comprehensive statement would be released soon.

In an email sent to customers, TM disclosed that some personal information, including names, MyKad/passport numbers, and contact details, may have been compromised. The company assured that no other data had been breached.

In light of this breach, TM recommended that affected customers take precautions to safeguard themselves, such as being vigilant regarding unsolicited communication via email, phone calls, or WhatsApp.

Furthermore, customers were advised to refrain from clicking on suspicious email links or downloading attachments, as well as avoiding sharing personal information with unauthorized individuals.

When a user tweeted about receiving the SMS, TM replied, stating that they are aware of the data breach affecting certain Unifi customers. They also confirmed that the breach had been contained and appropriate measures had been taken to minimize its impact on affected users.

This marks the second breach TM has experienced recently. In December 2022, the company confirmed a data breach affecting 250,248 Unifi Mobile customers.

The latest incident came to light when an intrusion expert shared a post on a prominent data breach forum, claiming to sell customer information.
