NEW YORK (Reuters) – Former FTX cryptocurrency exchange executive Ryan Salame is currently facing an investigation by federal prosecutors for potential violations of campaign finance law, as reported by the Wall Street Journal on Tuesday. According to sources familiar with the matter, the investigation focuses on the money Salame provided to his girlfriend, Michelle Bond, who ran an unsuccessful campaign for the Republican nomination for a congressional seat in New York last year. Additionally, prosecutors are looking into the loans made by Bond to her own campaign.
The U.S. Attorney’s office in Manhattan, when approached for comment, chose not to provide any information regarding the investigation. Presently, neither Salame nor Bond have been accused of any wrongdoing. The lawyers representing both individuals have not yet responded to requests for comment.
It is important to note that the ongoing investigation into Salame is separate from the criminal case involving FTX founder Sam Bankman-Fried. Bankman-Fried has already pleaded not guilty to allegations of misappropriating billions of dollars in customer funds, which ultimately led to the collapse of the once-thriving cryptocurrency exchange. His trial is scheduled to commence on October 2.
