British media regulator Ofcom has requested that the UK antitrust regulator investigates the dominance of U.S. tech giants Amazon and Microsoft in the UK cloud market. Ofcom’s study has highlighted certain features that make it challenging for UK businesses to switch to and utilize multiple cloud suppliers.
In a statement, Ofcom said, “The CMA (Competition and Markets Authority) will now conduct an independent investigation to decide whether there is an adverse effect on competition, and if so, whether it should take action or recommend others to take action.”
According to two sources familiar with the matter, Reuters reported on Tuesday that Ofcom was expected to advocate for an antitrust investigation into Amazon’s and Microsoft’s dominance of the UK cloud computing market.
Ofcom began examining cloud services last year and expressed particular concern in April about the practices of Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Microsoft due to their market positions. It had planned to approach the competition regulator and request an investigation.
