Apple has released a significant security update for iPhones and iPads on September 7th to address newly discovered security vulnerabilities in the devices’ system software. The flaw was found by researchers at the University of Toronto’s Citizen Lab, who have reported that it was actively being exploited to spread Pegasus, a commercial spyware developed and sold by NSO Group, an Israeli company.
Pegasus is known to be an expensive tool, usually employed to target dissidents, journalists, and political opponents. Therefore, ordinary users are unlikely to be directly affected. However, Citizen Lab advises all users to promptly update their devices as a precautionary measure.
To install the update, users need to open the Settings app on their iPhone or iPad and select “General,” followed by “Software Update.” The iOS 16.6.1 software update should be visible, and users can tap to initiate the installation.
In case the update is not visible, users can return to the General page and select “About” to check their iOS version number. If the version number is 16.6.1, it means the update has already been installed. If the device is still using version 16.6 or an earlier version, users can repeat the aforementioned steps.
If the update is still not appearing, the user can try restarting their device. If that does not solve the issue, they should ensure that their internet connection is stable and then wait for some time before attempting again.
Updating the device to the latest software version is crucial in ensuring the security and privacy of users’ data. Apple regularly releases updates to address any potential vulnerabilities and enhance the overall security of their devices. Therefore, it is recommended for all users to stay up to date with the latest software.
This recent security update specifically addresses the security flaws exploited by the Pegasus spyware. By installing the update, users can protect their devices from potential attacks and safeguard their personal information.
Given the nature of the Pegasus spyware and its targeting of specific individuals, the risk to ordinary users is minimal. Nevertheless, it is always advisable to take necessary precautions and ensure that devices are updated to the latest software version.
Apple continues to prioritize the security and privacy of its users, and such updates are a testament to their commitment in this regard.
