A San Antonio man is facing charges after being accused of secretly recording his relatives in a family bathroom. Jose Maria Espinoza, 56, was arrested on Thursday and now faces two charges of invasive visual recording. His bonds have been set at a total of US$130,000 (RM610,610).
The alleged incidents took place in December 2022, when Espinoza reportedly used his smartphone to record at least three family members, including a minor, while they were using the bathroom. According to an arrest affidavit, Espinoza’s stepdaughter discovered his cellphone in the bathroom while she was showering. After realizing that the phone was recording, she immediately reported it to her mother.
Upon being confronted by his partner, Espinoza admitted that the phone belonged to him and apologized to his stepdaughter. However, he refused to provide her with the password to access the images and videos stored on the device, as stated in the warrant.
Investigators were able to obtain Espinoza’s phone and discovered numerous other images that appeared to have been taken from hidden locations, capturing women in bathrooms and dressing rooms. The warrant also suggests that Espinoza may have taken some of these images himself.
San Antonio police confirmed that the arrest was carried out without incident. Records from Bexar County Court indicate that Espinoza does not have any prior charges. He is currently being held at the Bexar County Jail.
