The U.S. Space Force has temporarily halted the use of web-based generative artificial intelligence (AI) tools due to concerns over data security, according to a memo obtained by Reuters.

Dated September 29, the memo addressed to the Space Force’s workforce, known as Guardians, prohibits personnel from utilizing AI tools, including large-language models, on government computers until formal approval is granted by the Chief Technology and Innovation Office. The temporary ban is in place due to the risks associated with data aggregation.

The use of generative AI, which is powered by large language models that utilize vast amounts of past data for learning purposes, has seen significant growth in recent years. OpenAI’s ChatGPT, for example, can quickly generate various forms of content, such as text, images, or videos, based on a simple prompt.

Lisa Costa, the Chief Technology and Innovation Officer for Space Force, stated in the memo that this technology has the potential to revolutionize the workforce and enhance Guardians’ operational capabilities.

An Air Force spokesperson confirmed the temporary ban, which was initially reported by Bloomberg. According to the spokesperson, the pause is necessary to determine the optimal way to integrate these capabilities into Guardians’ roles and the mission of the U.S. Space Force. The spokesperson also emphasized that this measure is temporary and aimed at safeguarding the service’s data and Guardians.

Costa further mentioned in the memo that her office has established a generative AI task force in collaboration with other Pentagon offices. This task force will explore responsible and strategic ways to leverage the technology.

Additional guidance on the use of generative AI within the Space Force will be issued within the next month, according to Costa.
