BERLIN (Reuters) – Volkswagen has announced that it will produce its Trinity electric vehicles (EV) at its factory in Zwickau, according to a statement released on Friday. The decision comes after a supervisory board meeting, during which the location for the prestigious EV was discussed.

The German carmaker stated, “It was decided that there was no need to build an additional plant in Wolfsburg Warmenau.” In addition to this announcement, Volkswagen also confirmed that its iconic Golf model will be navigating the shift into the electric future at its main Wolfsburg plant.

Originally scheduled for launch in 2026, the Trinity electric car is set to be based on Volkswagen’s new SSP platform. However, shortly after assuming the role of Chief Executive, Oliver Blume postponed the project by two years. This decision was made in order to alleviate pressure on Volkswagen’s struggling software subsidiary, Cariad.

Initially, Volkswagen had planned to construct a new factory specifically for the Trinity model. However, due to delays in the brand’s development, the carmaker began considering converting its Wolfsburg factory instead.

Volkswagen’s move towards electric vehicles reflects a broader industry trend, as car manufacturers respond to increasing demand for sustainable transportation options and stricter emissions regulations. The Trinity electric car is expected to play a significant role in Volkswagen’s electric vehicle lineup.

The German carmaker has been actively investing in electric vehicle technology and infrastructure. They recently announced plans to build six large battery factories in Europe, as part of their broader goal to become the world’s largest electric vehicle maker by 2025.

By producing the Trinity EV at its existing factory in Zwickau, Volkswagen will leverage its existing infrastructure and expertise in producing electric vehicles. This decision is also aligned with the company’s strategy of optimizing its manufacturing processes and reducing costs.

Overall, Volkswagen’s decision to manufacture the Trinity electric vehicles at its Zwickau factory is a strategic move that positions the company to capitalize on the growing demand for electric vehicles while maximizing operational efficiencies.

With the Trinity electric car, Volkswagen aims to further establish itself as a leader in the electric vehicle market and contribute to the transition towards sustainable transportation.
