(Reuters) – Meta Platforms owned WhatsApp is reportedly considering a new feature that would introduce advertising in the app. This would mark the first time advertisements are displayed on the platform, according to a report by the Financial Times on Friday.
According to the report, teams at Meta have been engaging in discussions regarding the possibility of displaying ads in lists of conversations with contacts on the chat screen of WhatsApp. However, no final decisions have been made regarding this matter. The report cited three individuals who are familiar with the situation.
Furthermore, Meta is currently contemplating the option of charging a subscription fee to use the app without advertisements. It should be noted that many insiders within the company are opposed to this proposed move, the report added.
At the time of writing, Meta has not responded to a request for comment made by Reuters.
