The introduction of passkeys on WhatsApp is set to increase the adoption of this technology, which allows users to log in to an online service without entering a password. The feature relies on biometric recognition, such as facial or fingerprint recognition, and will soon be available on the Android version of the messaging app.
Passkeys are unique digital keys that are automatically generated and stored on users’ smartphones. They are activated through biometric authentication, eliminating the need for remembering passwords. Users can simply verify their identity using their phone’s fingerprint reader or facial recognition system. The ultimate goal is for passkeys to replace traditional passwords.
However, at present, passkeys are not widely implemented. While major online service providers like Google and Apple have already adopted the technology, few third-party apps have followed suit, with a few exceptions like 1Password and Dashlane. Nevertheless, this is about to change for one of the most popular apps globally, WhatsApp, starting with its Android version.
The introduction of passkeys will be rolled out gradually worldwide through an upcoming app update. Once implemented, users will be able to easily and securely log in using passkeys, verifying their identity through facial recognition, fingerprint scanning, or PIN code. This technology also removes the need for two-factor authentication via SMS.
The aim of incorporating passkeys is to enhance security. Unlike passwords, which are susceptible to hacking, passkeys are unique, generated locally on the smartphone, and not shared online. This ensures a higher level of protection for users’ data. – AFP Relaxnews
