BERLIN: You’re staring at a white screen with nothing else. Only the cursor and the letters you type are visible. Calmly Writer is a word processor, similar to Microsoft Word, but with a simple and tidy design. Its goal is to eliminate distractions and allow users to focus on their writing. Although the design and setting options are minimal, all necessary formatting options are still available in the menu.
Users can also insert images into their text and display the word and character count in the lower right corner. For a more immersive experience, users can go into full screen mode to hide menu bars. Calmly Writer can be used for free in a browser or downloaded onto a computer. If the browser option is chosen, it is important to download the document to the computer before closing the browser. Alternatively, users can save their work to Google Drive using the built-in option.
For longer texts or projects, it is recommended to download and install the program, which is compatible with Windows, Mac, and Linux. This allows users to save their work locally on the computer. Additionally, the computer version enables users to edit multiple texts simultaneously, organizing them as tabs at the top of the screen. There is also a focus mode that only displays the paragraph being written.
Similar to the browser version, the computer version of Calmly Writer is available for free, but the developers occasionally request users to purchase it for approximately €12/US$12 (about RM56).
For individuals struggling with writer’s block or procrastination, the developers have created an online app called Just Write. This app allows users to set word count goals or use a timer to stay focused. Furthermore, for those who work late into the night, the program offers an adjustable Dark Mode that changes the background to black and the letters to white. Lastly, nostalgic writers can enable a typewriter sound for audio feedback on their writing progress. – dpa
