A Florida Uber driver is accused of trapping a rider and sexually assaulting her in a parking lot, police said.
According to a Nov 2 news release from the St. Petersburg Police Department, Jose Antonio Canales Sanchez, 51, picked up a 32-year-old woman for an early morning Uber ride on Nov 1.
However, before they reached the drop-off point, Canales Sanchez pulled the vehicle into a parking lot, as stated by the police.
Police officials have reported that Canales Sanchez got out of the driver’s seat and moved into the backseat with the woman.
During this time, the suspect allegedly started undressing the woman against her will and touching her private parts, effectively trapping her within the vehicle.
Despite the distressing situation, the woman fought back against the attacker until she was able to escape.
Later that afternoon, Canales Sanchez was taken into custody by authorities and charged with false imprisonment and sexual battery, according to the police.
This incident has raised concerns about the safety of passengers using ride-sharing services, particularly when it comes to the screening of drivers and ensuring passenger security.
Uber has released a statement condemning the alleged actions of the driver and stating that they are fully cooperating with the police investigation.
They have also assured users that the safety and well-being of their customers are of paramount importance and that they have strict guidelines in place for driver vetting and safety protocols.
