A 24-year-old woman was shot and killed during a Facebook Marketplace meetup to buy an iPhone, as a Mississippi man posed as someone else online, officials revealed. Daniel Tenner, 21, was found guilty on August 15 by a Jefferson Parish jury for the murder of Morgan Tyrone in April 2022, according to the Jefferson Parish District Attorney’s Office. Tenner’s lawyers could not be reached immediately for comment.
Tyrone, hailing from Pascagoula, Mississippi, was conversing with an individual on Facebook about purchasing an iPhone 13, according to the attorney’s office. She believed she was in conversation with a woman, but it was actually Tenner, of Jackson, Mississippi, utilizing a woman’s Facebook account, as stated in the release.
On the evening of April 10, 2022, Tyrone, accompanied by her 22-year-old partner and their 13-month-old son, made the journey of over 100 miles from Pascagoula to Gretna, Louisiana, to purchase the iPhone. Tyrone reached the apartment complex as directed by the seller, where Tenner approached the driver side window and began conversing with Tyrone, according to investigators.
“During that time, Tyrone and Tenner were hesitant to exchange the cash and phone,” the district attorney’s release stated. “Growing doubtful that the transaction would occur, Tyrone turned away to put the cash on the minivan’s center console. That’s when Tenner brandished the pistol, pointed it at the left rear side of Tyrone’s head, and shot her without provocation.”
District attorneys stated that Tenner then pointed the pistol at Tyrone’s partner and demanded the money. He took the money and fled the scene, according to investigators. Detectives from the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office in Louisiana utilized Tenner’s cellphone records to trace his location to the apartment complex and subsequently found him heading towards Jackson. In May, the US Marshals Service fugitive task force arrested Tenner in Jackson.
Tenner’s lawyers argued that he “did not have specific intent to kill or inflict great bodily harm, which are necessary elements of proving murder,” according to the news release. They contended that he was armed due to meeting strangers at night.
Prosecutors stated that Tenner also threatened Tyrone’s partner after killing Tyrone. In addition to being found guilty of first-degree murder, Tenner was also convicted of armed robbery and obstruction of justice.
Tenner is set to be sentenced on September 15, according to the district attorney. – The Charlotte Observer/Tribune News Service
